The History Of Cash Registers

The first cash register, nicknamed the "Incorruptible Cashier", was invented in 1879 by James Ritty, the owner of a tavern who wanted to stop employee theft.

The cash register was originally designed to alert the manager of the opening and closing of the drawer with a distinctive chime, known in advertising circles as "The Bell Heard Round the World"

1884, John H. Patterson purchased the patent and The National Manufacturing Company, the company distributing the cash register. Patterson renamed the company The National Cash Register Company.

He further improved the cash register by adding a paper roll to record transactions as well as any opening and closing of the drawer, which not only deterred theft, it provided the owner with an accurate record of all sales on one neat and clean roll. In 1906 Charles F. Kettering, an employee of The National Cash Register Company gave the cash register an electric motor. Kettering also invented the electric ignition for Cadillacs.

In 1973, computerized cash registers were introduced which has given way to cash registers that work in tandem with scales, barcode scanners, and credit card terminals. Casio, NCR, IBM, Wincor-Nixdorf, Uniwell, and Sharp are the major manufacterers of modern cash registers, which are increasingly becoming integrated into general purpose computers with POS (point of sale) software.

Most major retailers in the world today use POS systems to monitor and record every aspect of a transaction, including sales, taxes, method of payment, time and date, classification of type of product and running totals of specific products sold for any given length of time.

The purpose of the modern cash register has gone far beyond simply deterring dishonest employees to being an essential tool for any business wishing to efficiently track its inventory and sales.
